Bike Smithfield is an advocacy initiative of the 501c(3) Non-Profit organization Revive the Roots (RTR). We believe that complete streets are the only streets that can assure safe and enjoyable travel for commuters in our home. Our mission is to help create a more bikeable Smithfield, RI!
What is a “complete street”?
“Complete Streets are streets for everyone. They are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities. Complete Streets make it easy to cross the street, walk to shops, and bicycle to work. They allow buses to run on time and make it safe for people to walk to and from train stations.”
Whats wrong with our current transportation infrastructure?
Here in Smithfield we have many incomplete streets, most of our transportation infrastructure serves the use of automobiles and limits our ability as a community to commute through our town on foot, by bicycle, and on public transportation. This makes these alternative forms of transportation unsafe and inconvenient.
Why “Bike Smithfield” ?
By diversifying the means by which we travel through Smithfield we can drastically reduce congestion in high traffic areas, reduce our carbon footprint significantly and promote healthier traveling options like walking and bicycling. This would adapt the capacity and efficiency of our roadways to the growing number of commuters in Smithfield and better serve our livelihoods.
We do not have a strongly embedded bicycle culture in Smithfield, that is because it is unsafe and inconvenient to commute by bicycle in our town. The bicycle, in our opinion, is the most empowering form of transportation by marrying efficiency & low cost maintenance with the ability to quickly get off your bicycle and to explore the various destinations that our town has to offer. People of all ages can and do ride bicycles, we’re here to advocate for everyone‘s right to the roadways and to teach our community members how to navigate the town safely by bicycle!
